The
Albuquerque branch of ASG has been active in supporting community
projects.
To
make a cancer pillow:
Cut a piece of soft cotton fabric 17.5" x 15.5". Fold the
17.5" side in half, right sides together. Stitch on open edges
leaving room for stuffing. Fill with rolled quilt batting.
The size of quilt batting used will depend on the thickness
selected. Stitch opening. The pillow should be soft.
Child's
Cloth Ditty Bag
Shown at the April 8, 2004 Albuquerque Chapter General Meeting
ASG member
Janet McKimpson says that the Las Cruces Chapter makes these
for more than 40 children each month who receive services
from the Dona Ana County Domestic Violence Department. They
use these bags for some of the items that the children will
be given when they are taken into custody. The children almost
always arrive with nothing more than the clothes they are
wearing, which sometimes amounts to very little.
This would
be a great project for the Albuquerque Chapter as well.
Materials:
½ yard 44/45" medium to heavy weight cotton material,
thread
Tools: measuring tape, pencil, scissors, serger, sewing machine
Square
up material. Measure 13" from cut/torn edge on selvedge,
snip, measure 2 ½", snip, tear into one 13"
X 44" and two 2-1/2" X 44" pieces. These are
the body of the bag, the drawstring, and the handle.
With right
sides together, sew and serge torn sides of 13" piece
of material. Result should be a 13" X 22" rectangle,
sewn together on the 22" side.
Fold 2-1/2"
strip in half, press, fold again, press. A 5/8" strip
should be the result. Sew on open edge. Repeat with second
strip. These are the drawstrings and handle.
With right
sides of fabric still together, fold side of bag so that the
side sewn edge lines up with the bottom fold line. Measure
in 2" from point and sew across. Repeat on opposite corner.
This makes a paper bag bottom when the bag is turned to the
right side.
Turn bag
right side out. Measure down 2" from selvedge edge on
each side of one side seam. At these points make a 1"
buttonhole starting at point marked and ending 3" from
selvedge edge. Cut open buttonholes.
Line selvedge
edge up with bottom of buttonhole. This should be a 1-1/2"
inch hem.
Sew along
selvedge edge. Sew around bag again at top of buttonhole.
A 1" casing with buttonholes on each side of one side
seam is now ready for the drawstring.
On the
right side of the bag bottom, on opposite seam from the buttonholes,
attach one 5/8" strip, sewing through bottom and triangle
of material formed when making paper bag bottom. Sew by placing
fabric strip end against the small 4" bottom seam and
centered over bottom seam, sew ¼" from end of
fabric, fold fabric back across end, sew again. The result
should be that the raw edge of fabric strip is now encapsulated
by itself and is on the bottom of the bag. Smooth strap up
the side of finished bag to top edge, add 1" and cut
off excess. 5/8" strip should now be the same length
plus 1" as the bag side. Attach this cut end in same
manner s the first end so that when finished it lines up with
stitching line that is 1'1/2" from top edge of bag. Important:
handle should be attached BELOW, not over, the casing.
Thread
remaining strip through casing. Even up ends. Stitch in ditch
at seam where handle is attached. This ensures that the drawstring
can not be removed. Tie double wrap knot on each end.
