The Albuquerque Sewing Guild is an affiliate of the American
Sewing Guild (ASG) with a total membership of 19,741 with
48 chapters.. The Albuquerque chapter was founded in 1994,
and now has approximately 175 members.
ASG holds
a national conference each year in summer. A "Chapter
of the Year" award is given to a chapter that has achieved
significant accomplishments. Awards are given according to
chapter size, (small, medium and large). There are many classes
in all areas of sewing, and fashion shows. Many vendors in
the sewing industry display their wares at the conference.
The Guild
meets once a month on the second Thursday of the month at
6:30 p.m. at the Asbury Methodist Church, 10,000 Candelaria
NE, Albuquerque. The meetings include a business meeting,
speaker or demonstration and "Show and Tell." Neighborhood
groups meet once a month. Their schedules are posted in "Biased
Opinions," the Albuquerque newsletter. Please see "Meetings"
for dates and programs for the
current year.
Community Programs both at a national and local level are
included in the Guild's activities: e.g., hats for cancer
patients; layettes for premature babies; "cool ties"
for our troops; bibs for severely handicapped children; gowns
and pajamas for children in the California Shriner's Hospital;
blankets for children who spend much of their time in hospitals;
and wheelchair caddies for veterans in hospital.
Membership
Membership to ASG is open to those who share a love of sewing.
For each person, joining ASG is a personal decision. Our members
may sew clothing for themselves and their family. They may
decorate their home with new draperies or a duvet that they
have designed and sewn. Others may sew for fashion dolls or
for children's dolls.
ASG members
have knowledge and skills ranging from beginners to professional
level. All levels of skill are welcome at the Albuquerque
Chapter. Our members share information and assist each other
with projects. There are community groups who get together
to sew projects between our general meetings.
Members
receive "notions" newsletter from ASG Headquarters;
"Biased Opinions" newsletter from the local chapter;
10% discount card from JoAnn's fabric store; monthly meetings
with door prizes; a lending library of books, videos, and
patterns brought to each meetings; and a membership list (members
may opt to not have their names listed).
